#7 Davis Moncus

Davis could be seen all over the field. Games 1 and 2 he started in Center Field and he pitched all 7 innings of Game 3. Davis is another valuable player to this Tiger team on offense and defense. You can visibly see the love Davis has for his team and this sport. In Games 1 and 2, Davis was constantly running from right center to left center to 400 feet away from home plate to catch fly balls. Davis also has a strong arm and can easily get a ball from center down to the infield with a quick preciseness! Davis settled himself onto the mound in Game 3 to keep Cherokee off the scoreboard after the first inning. Playing was extra special for Moncus as his grandfather, Coach Mike Moncus, was in the dugout cheering him on the whole time. Let’s see what Head Coach Tanner Glisson had to say about Davis:

I asked Coach Glisson about Davis...

“What does Davis mean to you and to the team?”

  • Davis is one of our best, most well-rounded players. If you saw him Game 1 out in Center Field in that big, big ballpark we played at in Rome - he’s just a natural Center Fielder. He just goes and gets balls smooth and easy. He’s got a really good swing from the left-handed side. He’s a really explosive base runner. He’s extremely quick. He’s got extremely good instincts and then he comes in and pitches for us. Baseball IQ is out the roof.

“Cherokee scored 3 runs right out of the gate. How did you feel in the moment and what did y’all say to him to get Davis settled to perform the rest of the game as he did?”

  • In his defense, it’s kinda hard from a position player standpoint to run that outfield for two games and come back 24 hours later and pitch. You think about pitchers and their legs, and him having a little deadleg. So, that’s my job to try and keep him fresh, but he’s a competitor and he’s a bulldog. I even tinkered with the idea of taking him out when it got 3-0 with the intention of bringing him back in to close the game in the end. I knew he was gonna gut it out and stick it out, or, even if I did make a move, I was going to go back to him at some point in the game.”

“What characteristic does Davis have that makes him a valuable asset to the team?”

  • “He has a tremendous amount of baseball IQ. I think his baseball IQ is second to none. He really rubs off on a lot of his teammates and a lot of his teammates are able to learn from him.”
